Hello!
For those of you who have joined me since I finished paddling the Mississippi River, welcome!
For those of you who have been on this ride since the beginning, here is a life update.
Canoe Rambler: The Book
The blog is becoming a book!
It’s been suggested to me on many occasions, so I decided to make it happen. I’m publishing a book of my 2022 trip down the Mississippi River.
If you’re one of the people that encouraged me to put my blogs into print, thank you so much for the support and encouragement! It means a lot to me.
The book will be divided into two parts: my personal account of the journey, and the River Log section of my posts, aimed at helping future paddlers navigate the waters from Itasca to St. Louis.
I’m putting the finishing touches on right now, and the book will be released on Sunday May 21st, 2023.
Which brings me to my next point….
Book Release Party
I am having a book launch to celebrate the launch of the book! I have to do this soon before I leave for the summer (more on that below).
Here are the details:
What:
In 2022 I took a canoe 2,340 miles down the length of the Mississippi River, from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.
This book is the stories of that adventure, as well as a section to aid future paddlers with the trip.
Please join me in celebrating this journey and this book!
There will be refreshments, copies of the book, a Q & A about the trip, and some artifacts from the trip.
Where:
Hidden Falls Picnic Shelter.
This beautiful park is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, just below Lock & Dam #1. After the flooding this spring, the water has created blue holes and is now a birding paradise. Exploration is encouraged! From the picnic shelter it’s a short walk to the Mississippi River, and views of Lock & Dam #1 are not far as well.
Here’s how to find it:
Hidden Falls Regional Park
1313 Hidden Falls Dr.
St. Paul, MN 55116
Drive down from East River Road, and the parking lot is at the first right turn.
When:
Sunday May 21st, 2023. 4pm - 7pm.
I hope to see you there!

Summer Plans at Crater Lake
I have a new adventure for this summer. I will be working as a Backcountry Park Ranger at Crater Lake National Park!
This park is located in southern Oregon and is the site of a collapsed volcano. As such, its only water source is snow melt and rain water; there are no streams feeding into it. Because of this, there is very little sediment brought in, and very little churn. This leads to Crater Lake having some of the clearest water in the world, a feature for which it is well known.
Visibility tests typically measure about 102 feet deep, while the maximum recorded visibility was 143 feet deep!1
Crater Lake is also the deepest lake in the USA, measuring just shy of 2,000 feet deep.
I’m sure I will continue sharing as I learn a ton more about this place. Expect some posts this summer!
And if you’re in the Crater Lake area this summer, stop by and say hi!

This is all so awesome, Jean Canot! Your book will be fabulous, and so helpful for future paddlers. Love the two-part idea. And CONGRATS on grabbing a job at Crater Lake. One of the prettiest places I’ve been…enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
Congratulations Jean canot! (Missed you in clarksdale this spring :(
Hope you’re well!
