For the past three months I have had the pleasure of working at one of my favorite places in the United States: Crater Lake National Park. I know most of you subscribed here are looking for Mississippi River content—don’t worry, that will continue this fall! But I’d be remiss if I didn’t write a post about my great summer at this beautiful place.
What a marvelous summer experience you've had! Such a beautiful place, and interesting - gorgeous pictures. I imagine you've not had a dull moment! I've thought for many years that the role of park ranger is perfect for you (seems like we all agree on this!).
You are experiencing the GREAT PACFIC NORTHWEST. I live in Lewiston, Idaho on the LEWIS AND CLARK TRAIL. One of your visits should be to visit the grave of JEAN BAPTISTE CHARBONEAU. He died in 1866 while crossing the Oywhee River. His grave marker is in Danner, Oregon. I invite you in 2025 to come paddle in a dugout canoe like Sacajawea and Jean Baptise the baby. It will be an incredible river journey from the MOUNTAINS THE SEA 220 years after the CORPS OF DISCOVERY.
Livin’ the dream. Crater is on the bucket list, but we will be exploring SW NP’s this winter. Great info and insights of the park. Following Muir’s reverence and rapture. I took my Scout troop on on a hike in the Montana Bear tooth Mts. We met a Ranger on the trail, dressed in the same garb you wear. It had taken us 3 days to get to that point. Lord knows where he came from. Friendly, helpful, kind, courteous, cheerful, etc. Lol. you have a great gig. You’re perfect for the role.
Great photos and awesome post! Thanks for sharing all this information as well as your experiences! My students had asked if you can swim in the lake - so now I have my answer! Did you have a chance to jump in?
I totally enjoyed reading about your summer at Crater Lake, Jean-Canot. I was there on a road trip with my family back in the 60’s, and then several years ago with my husband. Just an amazing place. So neat you took full advantage of it and surrounding area. Congrats on making the very most of of your summer, and making a difference for all those visitors.
JC. Another great post. What an amazing experience you’ve been having! Such gorgeous landscapes and scenery. I love the “old man of the lake”. It’s crazy how you can see the whole log through the clear water even in the photo. Thanks for sharing your latest adventure! Take care!

Great reading about your adventures JC.
Great stuff, J-C! Thanks for sharing.
One note, I cannot see the picture of the Old Man in the Lake, unless I'm missing it somehow. Cheers!
